Benny Benson, Seward Alaska. Winner Against the Odds: Benny was sent to the Jesse Lee Children’s home in Unalaska at the age of 4 after his mother died. When he was 13 years old he entered a contest to design a flag for the territory of Alaska and he won. Benny was attending Seward middle school when he won and is a source of great pride to both the community of Seward and to native Alaskan Indians. By James O’Neil
Dee Dee Jonrowe , Iditarod Dog Sled Race, Alaska. Winner Within Sports: The Iditarod Dog Sled Race is an 1100 mile race through the rugged interior of Alaska. No shortage of characters competing in that race. In 1996 Dee Dee was in a tragic car accident that took the life of her grandmother and hospitalized both her and her husband for an extended period. She continued to train for the race that year and came in 4th. In 2002 she competed 3 weeks after completing chemotherapy and finished in 18th. By James O’Neil
